Singara rat-tail radish produces edible, radish flavoured pods that are much longer, thinner, and more tender than other rat-tail radishes. They’re grown for the pods (not the roots) that can be eaten raw or added to stir fries.
- Botanical name: Raphanus Sativus
- Planting: Sow seeds in Autumn when the last of the summer heat is leaving, or in spring. Plant in well manured soil about 30-40cm apart.
- Care: Water regularly if the weather is dry. Keep the weeds down in the bed.
- Harvest: Harvest the pods when they’re still soft and the seeds aren’t bulging, picking when young is best before they get fibrous.
- Diseases: The most common problem with radishes is aphids and caterpillars.
- Cooking: I prefer to eat them raw but many people stir fry them..
- Seed Saving: Will cross with other radish varieties.
