Mandavilla laxa, also known as Chilean Jasmine, is a beautiful vine that produces highly scented flowers. It isn’t too vigorous or weedy, and grows to around 3m in Victoria. It’s a subtropical vine that is deciduous in our climate.

This is the ‘normal’ white flowered one, but it can come in pink or red.

  • Botanical name: Mandavilla laxa
  • Planting: Sow seeds in a tray when the weather is about 18 or so degrees. When big enough to easily handle, transplant to a bigger pot, and then to the garden when big enough. They should take 2-3 weeks to germinate.
  • Care: Plant out in an area that is protected from heavy frost in good, well draining soil. Water regularly if the weather is dry.
  • Harvest: Flowers can be used in a vase
  • Diseases: I haven’t had any pests or diseases on mine.
  • Seed Saving: Collect the seed pods as they turn brown.
