Rosa Bianca is a pretty, pink, Italian eggplant that’s known for its delicate flavour. The pink/lavender striped fruits are around 15cm long
- Botanical name: Solanum melongena
- Planting: Plant in late spring after frosts are unlikely in good and well manured soil. Plant 60cm apart.
- Care: Keep up the water in dry weather.
- Harvest: Harvest when at full colour with the colours bright. When they start to dull it’s too late. Better to pick early than late.
- Diseases: Eggplants can fall prey to some viral diseases so don’t plant in the same place that tomatoes or eggplants were growing in the past two years. If you get tomato earworm in them ( a caterpillar) you may need to net the plants from the time they start to flower – don’t worry, they don’t need insect pollination.
- Cooking: There are many eggplant recipes on the web
- Seed Saving: Eggplants are self pollinating so you don’t need bees or other insects to pollinate them. That said, they will cross with other eggplants if insects do visit the flowers so you should not plant two varieties within 400m of each other, or you can net them against insects before they flower.
