This is a lovely tasting and popular broccoli that produces masses of small sprouts rather than one large head. The sprouts are purple/green.

  • Botanical name: Brassica oleraceae
  • Planting: Sow seeds from summer to early Autumn. The plants should be maturing before the cold of winter hits or they may not grow well. Plant in well manured soil.
  • Care: Water regularly if the weather is dry.
  • Harvest: Harvest the shoots as they grow and before they start to expand. if you allow the shoots to flower the plants will stop production.
  • Diseases: The most common problem with brassicas is which cabbage butterfly. The caterpillars can decimate your plants. You can use Dipel (a bacteria that targets caterpillars) or cabbage dust, or you can net the plants against insects. Just make sure that when you net (use vegetable net or old net curtains) you check for caterpillars or eggs already on the undersides of the leaves, and don’t leave gaps between the net and the soil that a butterfly can enter.
  • Cooking: I prefer to steam the sprouts but there are a lot of other recipes on the net. They can be chopped up and eaten raw, or lightly baked and served with white or cheese sauce.
  • Seed Saving: Will cross with cabbages, cauliflower, Tuscan kale. Will not cross with Russian kale or bok choy. This broccoli may cross with other flowering brassicas within 500m so be careful that your neighbours aren’t letting theirs go to seed, or that you aren’t growing other varieties that will cross. Brassicas suffer from inbreeding depression so you shouldn’t save seed from less than 12 plants.
