Senoritas Hat is a fun broad bean from South America that produces seeds that have a red spot on the side. The pods contain 2-3 seeds each so they aren’t as productive as newer varieties. To make up for that though, they suffer less from chocolate spot.

They grow to around 150cm tall, but if planted later in the season the plants won’t grow as tall.

  • Botanical name: Faba vicia
  • Planting: Plant in Autumn, from mid March to mid May. Plant 30 cm apart.
  • Care: Broad beans don’t need a lot of care over the winter. Just make sure you keep any weeds down and that they are watered in dry weather. They’re frost tolerant. To stop them from falling over as they grow, place some strong stakes around the bed and run a couple of strings around them to hold them up.
  • Harvest: To harvest immature, wait till the pods are full and the seeds feel firm but are still green and harvest, then pod them to use. To harvest dry beans just wait till the pods are brown and dry and pick them off before podding.
  • Diseases: Chocolate spot – a fungal disease that causes brown spots on the leaves. This variety doesn’t get as much as other varieties and it probably doesn’t need controlling if they do get it.
  • Cooking: Broad beans are very nutritious and high in protein. They can be eaten raw or cooked as immature beans, no need to double pod. You can use mature, dry beans in casseroles and stews but you should soak them over night to soften, then peel off the outer skin before cooking.
  • Seed Saving: Will cross with other broad bean varieties within 400metres. Dry seed well and place in fabric/hessian bags, then placed in a lidded bucket to keep away from mice.
