Botanical name: Pisum sativum

Planting: Peas hat hot weather so plant either in early spring, or in Autumn when the weather starts to cool down, they’re fine growing over the winter. Plant 20-30 cm apart under a trellis or fence for them to grow on.

Care: Keep the water up to them if the weather is dry but otherwise just let them do their thing and keep the weeds away.

Harvest: Harvest the pods when immature and flat, before the peas start forming.

Diseases: They can get fungal diseases if they don’t have enough air flow so try to plant them where they get a breeze..

Cooking: Snow peas are generally eaten raw or lightly steamed, or added at the last minute into stir fries.

Seed Saving: Peas are self pollinating and the flowers are pollinated before they open so they won’t cross with other pea varieties even if they are near. Pick dry pods and shell them before drying. Place the fully dried peas in an airproof container before putting in the freezer for a couple of days to kill of weevils and seed mites before taking out and storing. Freezing won’t ham the seeds as long as they are fully dry.
